Dance workshops are special classes or sessions held at different times during the year for dancers. For instance, during the summer or extended school breaks or on the weekends. Their schedules are flexible for those who have other commitments. Dance students who attend these workshops have the opportunity to further their dance education in different environments.
There are numerous dance workshops sponsored through different organizations. Some require that participants be of a minimum age before they can attend, while others may require an audition or nomination by someone before you are allowed to attend.
If you do have a chance to go to dance workshops, use the time you will spend at them wisely. While some of them may be held in a more casual or informal atmosphere, others may be very intensive. No matter what the atmosphere is, however, you should:
Participate in as many sessions and classes as possible. You may only be able to choose one, but if that is the case, give it your all each and every time you walk in the door.
Many workshops require a fee in order to participate. If you cannot afford to attend a workshop, there are scholarships available. They are just like college scholarships, but, of course, they are in smaller amounts.
Respect the people who are conducting the workshop, even if you are not familiar with their instruction methods. Some of the teachers are professionals, and may not know or may have forgotten how to communicate with those who are not. Give them the benefit of the doubt.
Again, knowing the atmosphere in which the workshop is being conducted (formal or informal) can help here. If the atmosphere is one of “all work and no play”, then do not expect it to be otherwise.
