Trying Out For A Dance Team

Some dance teams require an audition before allowing you to join, while others open participation to anybody. If the dance team you wish to be involved with does require an audition first, here are some guidelines to help you overcome nervousness and prepare for your audition:

Attend as many performances where the dance team is appearing as you can before the competition, and watch their moves carefully. Many of the same moves are used each year, only their place in the routine is changed. Afterward, go home and practice them a little, but don’t overdo it.
You will probably be shown a few moves to perform at the audition, and you don’t want to have gotten into the habit of doing them wrong. You’re mainly just trying them out beforehand to get an idea of how to do them.

  • Get to know some of the people already on the dance team, as well as the sponsors. The idea here is not to “suck up”, but instead to make yourself familiar to them.
Get a good night’s sleep the night before the audition and make sure you eat a good breakfast on the morning of the audition. If the audition is to be held after school, eat enough lunch to keep you nourished until then, but choose a salad and fruit or something light.
  • When you go into the audition room, whether you are alone or in a group, walk in with your head held high and a smile on your face. Many times, the sponsors are looking at personality traits as much as they are ability.
  • Make sure you will be able to commit to the time you will have to devote to practices and events. Try to find out how often practices are held, and the number and dates of as many of the events as possible.
