There are almost as many types of dance as there are people who like to perform them. Some types can convey a serious message, while other types just make us feel good. Which one is your favorite?
· Interpretive: This can include ballet, hula, or any type of dance that is meant to tell or convey a story or theme. Sometimes the story or theme is clear, as in the case of the “Swan Lake” or “Sleeping Beauty” ballet, and other times the viewers are invited or expected to put their own ideas to the dance.
· Ballroom: This type of dance runs the gamut from very formal, such as the waltz, to downright steamy—the tango, for instance. The Big Band era saw the rise of many of the dances that are considered in this genre, such as the samba, the rumba, swing, the foxtrot, and others.
· Religious: Religious dance can be either interpretive or part of a ritual. The Shakers, a sect of believers who were found in Canada and parts of the United States, believed that dancing allowed them to enter into a closer communion with God.
· Square: The square dance is believed to have been born from the Quadrille style of dance that was practiced by both French and English people. This dance can fit into its own category as well as in the category of those that are Just Plain Fun!
· Just Plain Fun! This is any dance you want to include. Some of the more whimsical ones that come to mind may be the Charleston, the Twist, the Watusi, the Funky Chicken, and, of course the ubiquitous “Chicken Dance”! Hip-hop, line dancing, and break dancing can also be included in this category.
